About Norwegian SAR-dogs

Norwegian Search and Rescue Dogs is the leading organization in Norway for canine-assisted search and rescue operations. Their commitment and expertise are crucial in various emergency situations, including missing persons, avalanches, and urban disasters.

Key Highligts

Extensive Search Efforts: Norwegian Search and Rescue Dogs dedicate approximately 1200 hours each year to searching for missing persons.
Rigorous Training: Each dog undergoes about 500 hours of training to ensure they are fully prepared for search and rescue missions.
Massive Commitment: The organization as a whole contributes around 700,000 hours annually, combining training, organizational work, and active search efforts.
24/7 Availability: They maintain a state of readiness around the clock, 365 days a year, to respond to emergencies promptly.
Nationwide Coverage: As the only organization in Norway approved for search and rescue operations with dogs, they cover the entire country, including specific missions such as avalanche and urban search and rescue.

Operations summary

342 Approved Dogs Nationwide: These dogs are always ready to respond quickly, with about 460 call outs every year.
Avalanche Preparedness: 98 dogs are specially trained for avalanche situations, many of which are on a 15-minute readiness alert with the Norwegian Air Ambulance during the skiing season.
Urban Search and Rescue: 23 dogs are prepared for urban missions, both within Norway and internationally.
Head of Preparedness: The organization has a head of preparedness overseeing operations across the country and within each police district, ensuring that all approved dogs are accounted for and ready.
Operative Leaders: These leaders assist on-site, planning and directing search and rescue operations, ensuring the most effective deployment of resources.
Mission Call-outs: The organization is called out on missions by the police, ensuring a coordinated and efficient response to emergencies.
